FABRICATED AND LAMINATED FORMS OF NOMEX ®

NOMEX ® aramid paper is very often used in modified forms. For more specific information, see DuPont's brochure on 'Fabricated, Coated, and Laminated Structures of NOMEX ® Aramid Paper.' Some of the forms available include:

Punched parts - The paper is cut out to special shapes, often scored for folding in certain ways, for such uses as coil wrappers, printed circuits, switch covers, etc.

Hot-formed - Such pieces as V-rings for motors, wedges for motor slot liners, channels, cup washers, etc. can be produced by many manufacturers to meet special user needs.

Laminates - laminating of NOMEX ® aramid paper with MYLAR ® polyester film gives a material, commonly referred to as "NM" or "NMN", with very high edge-tear strength, excellent tear propagation strength, and excellent resilience to fit against the walls of the slots. The principal objection is that the thermal resistance is lowered by the low melting and softening points and the shorter life of the polyester film. Nevertheless, such products serve many useful functions in motors up to 155 º C. or even 180 º C. They may be suited for slot liners, wedge, and phase insulation, although for wedge insulation, 100% NOMEX ® is still generally preferred because it gives better stiffness when properly formed and is less subject to delamination, since no adhesive is used.

Creped - When properly creped, the "conformability" of the paper is sufficient to closely spiral wrap a round coil, which is difficult or impossible with "flat" NOMEX ® paper. The "stretch" (and cost per unit area) are increased 50-100%, but it has many uses for flexible or curved windings, leads, etc.

Precision Slit - Skilled specially slitters can slit NOMEX ® paper with accuracy of +/-.003" (+/-0.08 mm) or better. Any difficulty is usually meeting the tolerance with changes in humidity, since changes in width of paper can be as great as 2%, which exceeds the allowance in many tapes. If extremely tight tolerances are necessary, the paper must be handled with extreme care in humidity control. NOMEX ® is routinely slit by many fabricators using many different types of equipment, so skill and experience are the most important factors in this category of supply.

Sleeving and tubing - NOMEX ® can be routinely supplied in spiral-wound or convolute-wound tubing and sleeving in round and rectangular shapes, almost any wall thickness, and almost any size. There are many adhesives used for this, with thermal ratings up to 250 º C.

Coated - NOMEX ® paper has been supplied at one time or another with almost every kind of coating - TEFLON ® fluoropolymer, epoxy, polyester, phenolic, etc., in light or thick coats. Some coatings are uncured or " B staged " which means they can be heated and will flow and bond. Others are used mostly for moisture protection or to improve tracking resistance.

Self Adhesive Tape Electrical Tape 1N012 The backing is Nomex ® which has excellent solvent resistance. With UL Approved for temperatures up to 155 C and flame retardancy. (UL File No. E126174)
